Housed in Macbride Hall on the University of Iowa campus, the museum includes more than one million specimens including many fossils, stone tools, a mastodon skull, a large collection of birds and eggs, etc. Founded in 1858, it is the second oldest museum in the US west of the Mississippi River.
All galleries in the museum are open to the public during regular museum hours. Museum admission is free.
All areas of the museum are handicapped accessible, with elevator access to every floor.
The museum has pre-defined educational activities and guides that can be used with kids, such as scavenger hunts. Guided tours are also available with prior reservation. It also offers periodic events for kids, including a monthly story time.
Birthday parties can be held at the museum, and include a private room, invitation cards, activities such as fossil show and tell, a museum assistant, cake, drinks, party favors and a gift for the birthday child.
